Child Support Help in Long Island
Child support is an issue that is relevant to Long Island child custody matters. Depending on which parent gets primary custody of a child or children, child support may be awarded to the custodial parent. This amount may be agreed upon by both parents outside of court or may need to be resolved in front of a judge in family law court, depending on whether parents are able to reach their own agreement or if the court must intervene. No matter the particular questions or the legal matter you are dealing with in regard to child support, an attorney at Wisselman, Harounian & Associates, P.C. can help. We have been representing clients in family law matters throughout Long Island since 1976 and are here to help you.

How is Child Support Determined?
On Long Island, when child support is determined by the court it will be based upon a specific percentage of the parents' income. By taking the combined total of both parents' income, minus taxes, and then taking a percentage of that based upon the number of children (17% for one child, 25% for two children, 29% for three children and 35% or above for five children or more.) Child support will be paid to the custodial parent by the non-custodial parent in regular increments, typically monthly. Although child support is typically calculated based upon these set guidelines, there are situations where the court may implement adjustments.
